Steve Cambridge, a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, founded the Pacasmayo Marathon in 2008. Henry Horna, a Pacasmayino community leader, served as Race Director the first two years. Ashley Toombs, U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, was in charge of publicity and public relations. Hugo Cortes, another Pacasmayino, was in charge of race logistics.
The first Pacasmayo Marathon took place on Sunday, July 6, 2008 and had 110 runners, the majority of which were Peace Corps Volunteers. In 2010, just 2 months prior to the third Pacasmayo Marathon, Henry Horna, our beloved race director, passed away. Gino Horna, Henry’s son, became the new race director. Under Gino’s superb leadership, the Pacasmayo Marathon has become a running cultural phenomenon in northern Perú.
The Pacasmayo Marathon was created with the purpose of taking advantage of the natural beauty surrounding Pacasmayo. The picturesque course is made possible because of the natural diversity of soil types and vegetation bordered by the spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline. But the true beauty of the course is made possible by the local Pacasmayo citizens’ support. Their smiles, applause, and cheers for the runners makes this marathon a one of kind running experience.
The Pacasmayo Marathon was created to be a win-win event for the runners and Pacasmayo citizens. The Pacasmayo Marathon weekend was designed to not be “just another race”. It was created to be a “Weekend Running Experience”. At the same time, the race weekend was created to contribute to the Pacasmayo economy. Local artisans create the medals and trophies. Hotels, restaurants and stores benefit from increased tourism. A percentage of the profits from the marathon go to support a different non-profit organization in the community each year. And, local students learn first hand about volunteering as they rise early to support the runners throughout the race weekend.
Our goal, for each of the participants, is to create a running memory that will last a lifetime. Give us that opportunity to create it for you. Come to Pacasmayo the first weekend in July and experience Peruvian hospitality at it’s best. Come to Pacasmayo and experience a race weekend like no other race weekend. You will be glad you did!
