FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Why a virtual marathon?

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have three options: cancel, postpone, or have a virtual marathon. After waiting as long as we could to see if government restrictions would be lifted, we finally chose the virtual option. Choosing the virtual option allows us to maintain the continuity of the event, continue promoting the marathon event around the world, as well as being faithful to the runners who have supported us and hope to attend the Pacasmayo Marathon year after year.

2. What is a virtual marathon?

A virtual race can be run, jogged or walked from anywhere you choose. You will personally decide your own route by complying with government directives. With a positive attitude, creativity and social responsibility, we will bring out the best in each other by prioritizing the common interest of all over the personal interest of a few. You will have the flexibility to decide your start time as long as you are within the given time window of the event. You decide if and where you want a water/aid station or stations, as well deciding who will volunteer to support it. In essence, you will be your own race director.

3. How do I register for the event?

You will register through the Pacasmayo Marathon website: https://bit.ly/MaratonPacasmayoJoinnus

4. How much does the race cost?

There will be no charge for participating in the race . Based on everything that has transpired this year, along with the uncertainty of the coming months, the Marathon Organization wants to provide the registration fee to the 13th Pacasmayo Marathon Virtual Edition as our gift to each of you. All runners that complete their registered distance will receive a Digital Participation Certificate of Completion that includes the time, place, and age group by gender.

Because we are not charging a registration fee to cover the costs of medals and shirts, runners who desire a shirt or medal can purchase them in the Pacasmayo virtual store . The purchased items will then be sent by mail to your home. You are under no obligation to purchase either one. However, we wanted to make them available to you in case you wanted a souvenir of the event. In addition, you can also check a box for donations. Donations are always appreciated and a percentage will be given to an organization(s) designated by the marathon committee.

5. Where and when will the event take place?

The 13th Pacasmayo Marathon – Virtual Edition, will take place anywhere in the world from 04:00 (CST) on Saturday, July 4th to 22:00 (CST) on Sunday, July 5th. Hosting the

event over two days will allow us to accommodate runners participating around the world who live in various time zones.

6. Can I participate both days?

Yes. The participation window is from Saturday, July 4, 4:00 am (CST) to Sunday, July 5 at 10:00 PM (CST). If someone wants to run on both days, both registrations will be officially approved and results will be provided. For example, you can register for the 5Km race on Saturday and the 10Km race on Sunday. Both registrations will be a part of the official competition tabulation. However, combined distances over a two day period will not be accepted. In other words, if you register for the 21Km race and run 10km on Saturday and 11Km on Sunday, you will not be a part of the official 21Km race competition tabulation. Instead, your results would register as two different 10 km runs and both results would enter into the official 10Km race competition tabulation.

7. How will the event be timed?

If you have not already done so, please make sure to install the Strava app on your mobile for free or connect your GPS watch to Strava.

The 13th Pacasmayo Marathon 2020 Virtual Edition will be one of the listed races on Strava . Make sure you join the official Pacasmayo Marathon club: https://www.strava.com/clubs/Pacasmayo

After completing your race, you will be able to link your return time to the Pacasmayo Marathon. We will provide more details on the website on how to use Strava as we get closer to the event.

8. I cannot install Strava, nor do I have a GPS watch, can I participate?

Yes. However, your participation cannot be included in the official results table since we have no way of validating the distance or the time it took you to cover the chosen distance. However, we invite you to participate and send a photo of your time and course and we will include you in the official list of participants who registered for the 13th Pacasmayo Marathon 2020 – Virtual Edition.

9. Where can I run?

Where you decide to run the Pacasmayo Marathon – Virtual Edition is your choice. The course must comply with government restrictions.. Be creative, have fun and be responsible.

It is not our intention to encourage, suggest or support any participants who violate the laws, norms, directives or protocols of the national government. Nor do we encourage, suggest or support any participant to go against local references to compulsory social immobilization and / or mandatory social distancing, quarantines or physical / recreational practice protocols that each location / region / country has approved and enforces. We urge you to educate yourself and strictly adhere to the laws, norms, directives and protocols of the national and local governments. Please be responsible.

The vast majority of participants will be able to design courses in a closed loop within a housing complex or private neighborhood. Participants will identify a route that uses common areas; parking lots, or large, open areas near their homes that complies with current national / local government regulations without any health or civic concerns.

Courses need to be designed so that runners can distance themselves from population dense areas. Places such as forests, beaches, parks, mountains and deserts may be an ideal setting to design a course. The main consideration in selecting a site is to comply with government directives that do not represent potential health or safety risks for the participants or community members.

10. Can I run in my house or yard?

Yes. Feel free to run on a treadmill in your own home or fitness facility. However, although you have the freedom to choose the place you want to run / walk, we do not recommend participating in a race greater than 5km in a closed area running less than a 200 meter loop course. It is has been suggested that repetitive movements in a small area can cause injuries. It is not our intention that your return to physical activity following the race be delayed because of course selection. Please use common sense to determine if the location is safe for you. If not, please choose another location or choose not to participate.

11. Do I have to make accommodations for altitude or inclines/declines?

No. You have 100% flexibility in your course design. If you want to run a flat circuit, no problem. If you want to run a hilly course, go for it. For the purposes of competition, only total time of the race will determine a participants place in the standings, the decrease or increase in altitude will not be a factor. The degree of course difficulty is up to you. That being said, we will give a special shout out to individuals who challenge themselves by adding altitude changes to his/her course.

12. Can I walk?

Of course. Walking at the start, during, at the end or anything in between is fine. The spirit of the Pacasmayo Marathon 2020 – Virtual Edition is highly recreational. You can walk, jog or run. You will determine your own level of challenge and course goals in the distance for which you registered.

13. Can I change the race distance once I have registered?

Yes. We will accept distance changes until Friday, July 3 at 5:00 p.m.(CST). We understand that circumstances change. Thus, you can change to a lower or higher distance without any problem before the above date and time. Simply send an email to: marathonpacasmayo@hotmail.com . Write “Change of distance” in the subject line and include details of the runner.

14. When and where are the results published?

Once the participation window closes at 10:00pm(CST) on Sunday, July 5, the results will be processed and sent to the participants’ email addresses. In addition, the results will be published on the website www.maratonpacasmayo.com as soon as possible.

15. Is there an award?

There will be no individual awards this year. Because it is impossible to verify with 100% certainty that a runner’s time is accurate, as well as potential measurement problems with a GPS and individual course variables, the 13th Pacasmayo Marathon Virtual Edition will not have our usual handmade, one of a kind, artisan made marble trophies and medals. This special virtual edition race will place more emphasis on recreation than competition.
That being said, the Pacasmayo Marathon will recognize the team whose runners/walkers complete the most kilometers during the two days. For this reason, it is important that you designate the team you are on when you fill out the registration form.

16. Strava and technology

We understand these measurement systems are not perfect. Different brands can specify different distances for the same course. Our request is that you complete the distance based on your own GPS. Don’t stop until you cover the distance of the race you have selected.

In order to facilitate the control of results, it is necessary and mandatory that the Strava profile be kept PUBLIC from the week before the race and until one week after the end of the competition.

It is critical that if you use another GPS device such as Garmin, Polar, Suunto etc. that you sync your results with Strava at the end of the race.

If you forget to do this, we won’t be able to validate that you actually competed in the race because we won’t be able to see your personal activity log account. Strava will be the only platform that we will use for results and participation purposes.

17. Health and injuries

We remind you that it is your responsibility to select an appropriate place to run the event as specified by national or local government rules and regulations.

Also, we ask that you be aware of your current training status and avoid self-harm. We want to see all runners return to normal activity as soon as possible. The last thing we want is for your participation in this virtual edition of the Pacasmayo Marathon to delay your return to normal physical activity.

Therefore, if at any time during your event that you have doubts about whether you should continue or not, we recommend opting for not continuing and terminating your participation. Your long-term health is a priority and we want to see you remain that way as long as possible.

The USATF organization does not allow you to wear earbuds during road races. You need to be alert to other runners and vehicles around you for your health and to reduce the risks of accidents.

18. Technical talks

Three technical presentations will be held with Director of Virtual Races and Technology, Luis Miguel Garzón, CEO of @TrebolCamp, who are our partners in virtual logistics. These presentations will provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions regarding the virtual nature of the marathon. The presentations will be the same. Luis Miguel is providing three different times in order to accommodate as many runners as possible who would like to hear the presentation and ask questions regarding the virtual event. These presentations will take place using the social networks: Facebook, Instagram and Zoom.

#1: Wednesday June 24, 8:00pm (CST)

#2: Sunday, June 28, 7:00pm (CST)

#3: Thursday, July 2, 8:00pm (CST)

19. What are the dates of future competitions?

The four competitions, 5Km, 10Km, 21Km and 42Km of the Pacasmayo Marathon are always held on the first Saturday and Sunday of July each year in Pacasmayo – La Libertad- Peru. Next year will be our 14th year.
We hope to see you in person!

You must be very capable to locate the person responsible for the delivery of kit race in the store on the street.
